The highly contagious Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is on the rise in Alabama, according to testing done at a UAB lab, with the variant accounting for just over 70 percent of sampled COVID-19 tests down by the lab in the last two weeks. Men’s basketball picks up LSU transfer Josh LeBlanc, Sr Men’s basketball head coach Andy Kennedy continues to assemble his roster for the upcoming season, adding a sixth newcomer to the roster in LSU transfer Josh LeBlanc, Sr. The 6-7 forward played for a single season at LSU and two at Georgetown before that. Casey Dunn was named the program’s sixth head coach by UAB athletic director Mark Ingram on June 23. Dunn is a native son of Birmingham, having spent the last seventeen seasons as head coach at crosstown foe Samford. “We are thrilled to welcome Casey Dunn into our UAB family,” UAB athletic director Ingram said. “His relationships in Birmingham and around the country, along with his track record of success made him an ideal choice. Laci Turner wins C-USA Spirit of Service honor UAB track & field athlete Laci Turner was honored with the Conference USA Spirit of Service award. Conference USA hands out one honor to an athlete at each school three times a year in recognition of their community service, academic honors and athletic achievements. This honor is for spring sport athletes. Turner, a senior majoring in biomedical sciences, competes in a variety of events for the team. UAB held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new McMahon Residence Hall the morning of Wednesday, May 26. The 231,089-square-foot building is set to open in August of 2021 as the newest on-campus residence hall.  At the ceremony held at the building, several UAB officials and the buildings namesake John McMahon, Jr. spoke about the new residence hall and the honor of the naming. The building’s namesake is trustee emeritus John McMahon, Jr., a prominent local businessman with the McWane, Inc. and Ligon Industries.
