The Blazers will look to slay the Blue Raiders this week as UAB men’s and women’s basketball teams set off to face Middle Tennessee this week. This week’s games are a bit different than usual. The teams will get a little breather from the back-to-back games that have become the norm in Conference USA this season. Led by 32 points, 11 rebounds and five assists from Tavin Lovan, UAB’s men basketball team completed the sweep over Rice 86-74 in this year’s edition of the Bartow Classic. UAB got off to a strong start, leading the game 18-7. Rice briefly took the lead off a 16-2 run, but the Blazers outscored the Owls by 15 to close the half and put them up 11 at halftime. Poor shooting from the Blazers coming out of halftime allowed Rice to catch up and cut the margin to one, but the Owls never retook the lead. UAB’s shooters warmed up…

After an up-and-down trip to Charlotte, UAB men’s basketball will back in Bartow for a two-game series versus the Rice Owls. Saturday’s game will be this season’s Bartow Classic. Since 2009 the Bartow Classic has been an annual event held in honor of UAB’s iconic first basketball coach and later athletic director Gene Bartow who died of cancer. The event is meant to raise awareness and support for cancer research This year’s Bartow Classic was originally scheduled to be played versus Georgia Tech, but COVID issues within the UAB program forced the cancellation of that game. Charlotte wins the series as the Blazers faltered down the stretch It was back-and-forth between the Blazers and the 49ers, but the Blazers ended up on the wrong side of a 72-64 loss to end the game. “Proud of our team’s effort and saw improvement from yesterday to today defensively,” head coach Randy Norton said of his team.
