Both the UAB men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to hit the court for back-to-back games against Southern Miss on January 8 and 9. The men will be in Bartow Arena, the women in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Blazers’ second-half comeback attempt came up just short against Chattanooga losing 66-69 in Bartow Arena Saturday. The Blazers started hot leading by as much as 12 early in the first half. Momentum shifted to the Mocs side, though, and they led 35-31 at halftime. In the second half, Chattanooga pushed that lead out to as much as 14 before UAB mounted a comeback. UAB men’s basketball moved to a program record 7-0 start to the season after a dominating 88-46 victory over the Southern Jaguars in Bartow Arena Wednesday night. The Blazers took control of the game with around 12:54 left in the first half when they broke a 10-10 tie and began the first of multiple minutes-long droughts for the Jaguars. UAB led by as much as 51 points in the game. The margin narrowed late in the second half as Southern scored the final nine points of the game against the UAB bench. UAB is 6-0 and off to their best start in program history as they prepare to face Southern and Chattanooga this week. The Blazers skated past their toughest challenge thus far in the season with a win at East Tennessee State this past weekend thanks to a late three-pointer by Jalen Benjamin. Vs. UAB never trailed as they beat in-state rival, Troy, 77-55 at Bartow Sunday. A quick 11-0 start put the Blazers in charge early and they never looked back. UAB was faster and more physical, scoring more fastbreak points and points in the paint than Troy. UAB also outrebounded Troy 43-35. The Blazers were led by 18 points from Tavin Lovan and 17 from Michael Ertel. Trey Jemison recorded his second double-double in two games putting up 10 rebounds and 13 points in 30 minutes.
