The UAB Bowling team (42-40, 9-8) traveled to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship Games in Virginia Beach with aspirations of winning a conference championship and advancing deeper into postseason play. With the world watching, and on the biggest stage in the sport, Andy Kennedy and the Blazers (27-8, 14-4) suffered a heart-wrenching, season-ending 82-68 loss at the hands — claws? — of the Houston Cougars in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on March 18. Despite the disappointing loss to eventual Elite-Eight squad Houston, the Blazers capped off a magical run in March with a Conference USA tournament championship, Jordan “Jelly” Walker being named Conference USA player of the year and one of the best offenses in UAB history. For the first time since 2015, the UAB Blazers have won the Conference USA tournament championship and are headed back to the big dance. They defeated LA Tech 82-73 Saturday night to earn the title.  The Blazers led by as many as 19 during the contest but saw their lead cut to just three in the final minutes of the game. Coach Norton and the Blazers’ run in the Conference USA tournament came to end on Thursday after a 71-65 loss to Louisiana Tech in the quarterfinals.  UAB played hard throughout but could not keep up with the Lady Techsters and all-conference player Keiunna Walker, who had a game-high 29 points. Despite their struggles to defend Walker, UAB had plenty of chances down the stretch to take the game but could not buy a bucket when it mattered most. In a back-and-forth game that saw Zakyia Weathersby record her 20th double-double of the season, UAB (15-13, 8-9) failed to find a rhythm on offense and fell to Southern Miss (17-10, 9-7), 57-67.  The Blazers opened the game with baskets by Maria Roters and Margaret Whitley but were quickly matched with big shots from USM’s Daishai Almond and Domonique Davis. Men’s Basketball  Coming off their first road sweep of the season, the Blazers (22-7, 12-4) have nearly locked up the two seed in the West. The only thing standing in their way is a Southern Miss team that has not won a game since mid-January.
