KJ Buffen’s double-double led UAB men’s basketball to victory over East Tennessee State 70-56 in a Wednesday night matchup in Bartow Arena.  The Blazers started slow with ETSU taking the lead within the first three minutes of the game and holding onto it until the second half. ETSU scored first after rebounding a missed three-pointer. UAB’s Trey Jemison evened the score with a layup followed by a jumper by Buffen. ETSU held a 26-13 lead with just over seven minutes on the clock when UAB’s Quan Jackson threw the ball up allowing KJ Buffen to set it in the goal. Sumedha Bobba and Banks Stamp are the winners of the 2022 Mr. and Ms. UAB scholarship. The Mr. and Ms. UAB scholarship program is sponsored by the UAB National Alumni Society and has been a tradition at the university since 1981. Bobba is a sophomore majoring in neuroscience on the pre-med track and is working toward an accelerated master’s in business administration. She is also involved in UAB’s Trailblazers and undergraduate research. Stamp is a junior majoring in political science and is pursuing an accelerated master’s degree in public administration. He is president of Sustain at UAB and College Democrats at UAB and is a health policy ambassador for the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy. With 14 seconds on the clock, UAB’s Tony Toney stole the ball and dunked to push the score to 98-61 to end the game. UAB (3-0) took down Rhodes College (2-1) 98-61 with five players scoring in the double-digits. UAB started the first half aggressively, blocking the Lynx from scoring five times. UAB won the tip and spent the first minute of the game under their own goal. However, Rhodes was able to score first. UAB’s Trey Jemison picked up a double-double with 12 points and rebounds each. UAB took down Shorter 76-45 in the first game of their regular season. UAB’s Emily Klaczek set a career high scoring 18 points this game and shooting 4-4 at the line. Shorter’s Kelly Pickett opened the game with a fast break layup for the Hawks. This was followed by a personal foul on Shorter’s Tiara Lewis. The made two free-throws by UAB’s Margaret Whitley evened the score to 2-2 only a minute into the game. The Hawks scored 18 points and there were five lead changes in the first quarter. In this meeting they approved the 2022 budget allocations and met with their school and non-school committees to discuss upcoming projects. Sarah Tran, vice president of finance, presented the Spring 2022 budget allocations for student organizations. The budget is created when student organizations submit a request for how much money they need and what they plan to use it for. UAB head coach Randy Norton said that after a rough conference play last year he is confident in his team’s improvement and looks forward to this season. “We just want to be the best we can be on the court, in the classroom, in the community, and in our personal lives,” Norton said. “Every day we come to practice with the mindset that we are here to win a championship because we believe that championships are won during practice.” UAB women’s basketball opened its season…

The panel included John Jones, vice president of Student Affairs; Pam Benoit, provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs; Brian Bowser, head of Dining; Andre Davis, director of Transportation; Christopher Jones, director of Student Multicultural and Diversity Programs; and Brian Johnson, director of Residence Life.   During the question-and-answer portion a question from students was about infestations of bugs and rodents in some of the residence halls. The pair serve as ambassadors to the university, starting the spring semester after their appointment through the next fall semester. Xavier Turner and Angela Lee are Mr. and Ms. UAB 2020-2021.
