The Bulldogs defeat the Blazers 5-1 The UAB baseball team was not able to come back and defeat the Samford Bulldogs in the 10th inning as the Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the 10th following an hour-hour rain delay to start the game. Austin Bohannon started for UAB (7-11, 0-0 CUSA) going four innings with two strikeouts. There would be seven other UAB pitchers put in the game with Evan Ingram (0-2) taking the loss after entering at the top of the ninth. After taking back the lead in the middle of the second half, UAB kept the lead to defeat Old Dominion 76-69 in game one of a two game series after being swept by Louisiana Tech last week. “The room after the game was good, there was a little bit of an exhale, but hopefully we can take care of our bodies come back tomorrow and get another win,” said head coach Andy Kennedy on the win. Starting Feb. 19, the Blazer baseball team will be able to take the field for the first time against an opponent since March of 2020. Due to COVID-19, UAB Men’s Baseball team was only allowed to play half of their 2020 season.  Last season the Blazers were 7-9 when the COVID-19 pandemic cut the season short. This year, the team is predicted to finish sixth in the Conference USA West division. “I’m really excited about this year’s team,” said head coach Perry Roth. “I think we have a competitive group of guys with high character and think we have a chance to be competitive.” Coach Roth is entering his 15th season with the Blazer baseball…

UAB women’s basketball lost their first game to Louisiana Tech in the two-game series continuing their losing streak a seven-games. Margaret Whitley led the Blazers in scoring with 13 points while also leading the team with six assists. Zakyia Weathersby led the team in rebounds grabbing nine of them while also scoring eight points. Keiunna Walker led the Lady Techsters in scoring with 22 points with six rebounds. Amber Dixon recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. UAB softball starts back up February 12 after almost one year since COVID-19 came into the United States. Not only will returning players like Sierra Frazier, Analyse Petree and Jenna Olszewski be able to play again, but the coaching staff will be back to help their players as well. Before the pandemic cancelled the remaining 2020 season for the Blazers, they were 15-11 in five tournaments that they played in. At the end of their season, the Blazers were on a three-game win streak looking to go further until COVID-19 emerged. Even with two UAB players getting injured, they were able to come back late in the second half to defeat Middle Tennessee by double digits. Tyreek Scott-Grayson dislocated his shoulder within the first five minutes of the game, and Jalen Benjamin had a knee injury in the last two minutes of the game. Michael Ertel and Trey Jemison led in scoring for the Blazers with 12 points. Ertel also grabbed five rebounds and four assists, and Jemison had six rebounds and five blocks. UAB men’s basketball defeats Rice 78-68 After Rice tied the game 44-44 in the second half, UAB went on a 12-0 run to help their victory by 10 points. “Our guys didn’t flinch, and we stuck to the game-plan,” said Coach Kennedy on UAB’s 12-0 run. UAB Women’s Basketball lost their first game to UNC Charlotte in the two game series. With a tied game at 74 each, the Blazers were unable to secure the win, as the 49ers made two free throws and a jumper to end the game. The final score was 78-74. Margaret Whitley led UAB in scoring with 26 points with six rebounds and four assists.
