Togetherall promotes mental health through peer-to-peer dialogue

UAB students have a new resource for mental health concerns with the Togetherall service.

“With Togetherall, students can get support and advice from other college students,” said Angela Stowe, director of Student Counseling Services. “It connects students to an online community of students across the world to talk about mental health concerns or other needs.”

The online platform is free to all UAB students and can be activated on the Togetherall website with a UAB email. The app is anonymous but still monitored by mediators to ensure students have access to direct support if needed.

What makes Togetherall different from other mental health services is the unique feature of peer-to-peer dialogue.

“It provides peer support. It doesn’t just give information but allows students to support each other. Whether that is through shared experiences or encouragement or ‘here is what helped me’ or ‘you’re not alone’ — all the ways students can benefit from that belonging and connection to each other,” Stowe said.

Togetherall also has features that promote creativity within the app, along with modules for mental health education.

These modules are self-help courses that provide students with mental health information and strategies to manage a number of issues such as sleep improvement, anger management, stress management and coping with grief and loss. These may be preferable for students who do not want to share with others.

“They are structured so that students can progress through the minicourses and engage in learning and activities to help with that particular area,” said Stowe.

As for the future of Togetherall and UAB, Student Counseling Services has plans for promotion and partnerships.

“Togetherall launched this fall, and we plan to make student videos — as well as other promotions — with student organizations such as Mental Health Ambassadors and UAB influencers. We already have worked with USGA in regards to promoting the platform,” Stowe said.

Togetherall can be accessed and activated on the Togetherall website with your UAB email. The service is available 24/7.

Students can find other online support resources, such as the B Well Mental Health App for iOS and Android, via the Telemental Health Services webpage. Students who prefer in-person help can find resources through UAB Student Counseling Services.
