UAB Men’s Basketball held the lead the entire game beating the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 72-60.
With seven steals and two blocks, the Blazers did an excellent job controlling the game by not letting the Eagles lead once during their game Friday night.
Jalen Benjamin scored 17 points with a pair of assists. Tyreek Scott-Grayson and Michael Ertel both scored 16 points and recorded three assists. Kassim Nicholson scored 11 points with six rebounds and three steals.
Tae Hardy led the Eagles with 16 points with a pair of rebounds and assists.
UAB started off hot with a 10-2 lead at 17:05 in the first half with Nicholson scoring seven points including a dunk to set the tone of this game. Southern Miss showed promise of a come-back by narrowing the score 28-26 with 5:35 left with a 3-pointer by Hardy. With 3:20 left in the half, UAB scored six consecutive points ending the first half 40-31.
The second half opened with Ertel scoring a jumper, then a 3-pointer scoring five more points for the Blazers. With 8:13 left in the second half, UAB led the rest of the game including an 8-0 run. UAB also scored the last two points of the night with Ladavius Draine fouling Benjamin ending the game 72-60.
The UAB Blazers (8-1) will play Southern Miss (5-5) again tomorrow Saturday, Jan. 9th at Bartow Arena.
