On Friday Twitter released a statement notifying users that they have permanently suspended President Donald Trump’s twitter account @realDonaldTrump.
“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” Twitter said in the blog post.
This decision came following the attack on Capitol Hill Wednesday when Trump’s supporters broke into the building forcing Congress to halt certification of the electoral votes as well as Facebook’s decision to ban Trump “indefinitely” on Thursday.
Twitter removed three of Trump’s Tweets that same Wednesday citing “repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy.”
One deleted Tweet included a video recorded regarding the Capitol Hill attack.
“We had an election that was stolen,” Trump said. “It was a landslide election, and everyone knows it, especially the other side. But you have to go home now.”
In the blog post regarding the decision to permanently suspend Trump’s Twitter account two Tweets were cited as important to the decision. One was his final tweet where he said he would not be attending the inauguration on January 20. In the other he called his supporters “American Patriots.”
“Our determination is that the two Tweets above are likely to inspire others to replicate the violent acts that took place on January 6, 2021,” said Twitter. “And that there are multiple indicators that they are being received and understood as encouragement to do so.”
The @POTUS account remains unbanned. You can read the full blog post here.
