Five great spots to study at UAB

A study session is only as good as the study location. Here are some of the best study spots on campus and tips for a successful semester.

Campbell Hall

Campbell Hall provides a combination of solitude and comfortable temperatures, creating perfect studying conditions. The dim lighting gives students a well-deserved break from the humid summer heat. Each floor comes equipped with seating options so students can take a load off while looking over their notecards. If the flow of students coming through the lobby is too distracting, seating options are available throughout the entire building, giving students a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the school year.

University Hall

If a well-lit building is more your speed, University Hall is a great place to study. With comfortable seating on all floors, this venue provides excellent views of campus to accompany your study break. For students needing writing space, tables are available both indoors and outside at the two main entrances of the building. The extra space allows multiple people to gather and study, which will come in handy when those dreaded group projects are assigned. If you plan on studying outside, though, be sure to bring the sunblock, as the shade can be limited throughout the day.

Hill Student Center

If convenience is key for your study routine, the Hill Student Center might have to be your next stop. If you’re in a rush to grub and study, head to the second floor with your Mein Bowl and get after it. The second floor of the student center is equipped with many seating options to accommodate your needs. With indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of tables, students can multitask without feeling crowded. The second floor also has more comfortable seating in the form of couches and love seats: the perfect place to crack open a textbook after a long stroll across campus.

Studying alone can be nice, but UAB has plenty of free resources that can help you boost your comfort level in class. The Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center (VMASC) is located in room 222 of the Sterne Library. VMASC offers advising, career counseling, tutoring and other resources to assist with a successful college career.

INTO UAB

INTO UAB is another resource that can boost your learning experience. This resource provides English Language tutoring for international students. Additionally, INTO provides help with visas, information on immigration, workshops, tutoring and fun events.

Hi there, my name is Emma Owen and I am a junior majoring in communication studies. In addition to writing for Kaleidoscope, I am a Blazerette and compete in the Miss Alabama Organization. Outside of class, I enjoy volunteering with various organizations in the Birmingham area, including Siren Snuggles, a nonprofit organization that I created and run. Sharing the stories of others through Kaleidoscope is a joy and I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity.
