The Blazers (5-2, 3-0) keep the Golden Eagles (1-6, 0-3) scoreless in a 34-0 victory. It’s the largest margin win for the UAB against Southern Miss and the first time they have held them to zero points.
UAB quarterback Dylan Hopkins moves up to 6-3 as a starter for the Blazers, throwing 8-13 with 147 passing yards and a rushing touchdown. Dewayne McBride rushed for a career-high 137 yards on 14 carries while adding a touchdown.
Hayden Pittman extended his reception streak to 32 games, the seventh longest streak in the nation, and the defense recorded a takeaway in six of the first seven contests and six games in a row – 12 total this season and 10 in the last four games. The defense has also recorded three straight games with red zone turnover.
UAB recorded the only points in the first quarter on the first drive of the game with a 25-yard field-goal by kicker Matt Quinn. However, the Blazers would score the next 28 points in the second quarter.
The Blazers had the ball at the start of the second quarter and scored on the first play with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Hopkins to Prince. After a few plays, Grayson Cash would block a Southern Miss punt and recovered it in the end zone. Cash has now recorded a touchdown in two consecutive games after a 100-yard pick six against Florida Atlantic.
On the next drive for the Blazer’s offense, McBride found a hole and rushed for a 31-yard touchdown. UAB would go on a score again with a three-yard rushing touchdown by Hopkins ending the first half 31-0.
The last number of points scored in the game was in the third quarter with a career-high 52-yard field goal by Quinn. Neither team would score in the fourth quarter with UAB winning 34-0.
UAB has now won eight of the last 10 games against Southern Miss and has evened the series at 5-5 in Hattiesburg.
UAB hosts Conference USA rival Rice (2-3, 1-0) for their homecoming and their fifth annual Children’s Harbor game Saturday, Oct. 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
