UAB played close with Old Dominion but fell 81-75 on their home court. ODU’s Brianna Jackson closed out the game with a layup for the Monarchs with fifteen seconds left on the clock.
Old Dominion (19-5) opened the game with a jumper, immediately followed by a three-pointer for UAB’s (13-9) Margret Whitley.
Top scorer Iggy Allen led the Monarchs to victory scoring twenty-nine points. While UAB stayed close in score with Old Dominion, they struggled when it came to keeping the ball. The Blazers ended the game with 20 turnovers.
UAB stayed within five points of the Monarchs throughout the first quarter eventually taking the lead with a three-pointer by Caitlynn Daniels.
Old Dominion caught up in the second quarter with baskets by Aziah Hudson and Jackson. However, UAB retained their lead, ending the half with a leading score of 35-33.
Old Dominion took the lead four minutes into the second half with a jumper by Mariah Adams. With 4:29 left in the third quarter UAB’s Whitley made two at the line bringing the score to 47-48 for the Blazers.
The Blazers ended the third quarter only four points behind the Monarchs. Old Dominion extended their lead in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by Ajah Wayne.
Old Dominion’s Wayne was the top scorer in the fourth quarter with seven points. UAB ended the game with a free-throw by Klaczek with ten seconds on the clock making the final score 81-75 for Old Dominion.
UAB head coach Randy Norton said that going into future games he expects his team to work together to lower the number of turnovers per game.
“It was a disappointing loss on our home court,” coach Norton said. “At some point we have to figure out how to take care of the basketball. The games that we lose is because of turnovers.”
UAB women’s basketball will play Rice in Houston Feb. 17. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
