Kaleidoscope’s January 2026 Athlete of the Month is Men’s Basketball player Jacob Meyer.
Meyer, ‘27, plays a large part in the Blazers’ scoring game. He averages 14 points per game and scored a season high of 29 points against East Carolina.
Originally from Covington, Ky., the junior came to UAB following seasons at Coastal Carolina University DePaul University. Despite an ankle injury 11 games into the season, Meyer worked hard to recover. This season, he hit a career milestone, scoring 1,000 collegiate points in UAB’s game against Tulane.
Meyer was inspired to start playing basketball by his older brother. He grew up watching him play and formed a love for the game. When the opportunity to play at UAB came, it was an easy yes.
“I grew up a Cincinnati fan knowing that Coach Kennedy coached at Cincinnati, and going to watch Cincinnati basketball was definitely one of the things that brought me here. He is a hall of fame coach in my opinion.”
When asked what role he plays on the team, Meyer says he would “definitely be, on the court, a scorer, but, off the court, just a guy who brings great vibes.”
“I always feel like when things get rough, especially outside of basketball, maybe in the locker room or something like that, I’m always the guy that just keeps everything calm and cool.”
While proud of his career scoring mark, he still has bigger goals for himself and the team this season.
“It means a lot. I feel like scoring a thousand in college is pretty hard. It’s easier in high school, but in college I think it’s harder to do, so it means a lot.”
His favorite memory in the UAB Men’s Basketball program thus far is celebrating the 109-106 double overtime win over South Florida with his teammates.
“I love them all. They’re all great guys.”
