The UAB Blazers took on the Akron Zips at Protective Stadium on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 13. The Blazers wore black jerseys to raise awareness for pediatric cancer patients, with each jersey featuring the name of a patient from the organization Smile-A-Mile instead of the player’s last name.
On the opening kickoff, Solomon Beebe returned the ball for UAB’s first touchdown of the night. The Blazers went on to score three more touchdowns in the first half by Nate Rogers, Jevon Jackson and Corri Milliner, leading 31-20 at halftime.
Although UAB did not score in the second half, the Blazers held strong for a 31-28 win over the Zips. Quarterback Jalen Kina threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns.
