The University of Alabama at Birmingham delayed the opening of campus to 10 a.m. Monday, prompting mixed reactions from students on social media and anonymous campus apps.

UAB announced the delayed opening Sunday evening via B-Alert, stating, “The university will delay opening, with classes and normal business operations starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 26.” The delay primarily affects morning classes and campus operations, particularly for commuters traveling from surrounding areas amid weather-related road concerns.

Some students reacting on anonymous campus apps such as Yik Yak expressed frustration with the decision. One student wrote that a 10 a.m. start was “diabolical,” adding that “if there’s ice on the roads at 7:30, it’s probably not gonna melt by 9:30.”

Another student questioned the effectiveness of the delay, writing, “The roads are going to be icy at 10 a.m. because it will be below freezing. So what does delaying classes until then do?”

Others compared UAB’s decision to those of neighboring institutions. One post on Yik Yak noted that the University of Alabama canceled normal operations for Monday, writing, “UA got cancelled btw.” Another post added, “UA, Jefferson State, and Montevallo closed, but not us.”

The University of Alabama announced Sunday that it would suspend operations after reviewing updated weather forecasts and increased chances of icy road conditions.

Classes and most campus services at UAB are expected to resume their regular schedules after 10 a.m. Students are encouraged to monitor official university channels for further updates.
