The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees has appointed Sid J. Trant as chancellor of the University of Alabama System. Trant’s role as chancellor, the UA System’s chief executive officer, includes overseeing three public universities—the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville—as well as the UAB Health System.
Trant graduated summa cum laude from The University of Alabama in 1983 and earned his Juris Doctor in 1986 from Georgetown University Law Center. With over 30 years of legal experience, he has established himself as an accomplished attorney, chair, and partner.
“It is an incredible honor to serve as chancellor of the University of Alabama System,” Trant said. “I am grateful to the Board of Trustees for entrusting me with this responsibility, and I look forward to working with our institutional leaders and all members of the UA System community to build upon our momentum and achieve even greater success.”
Trant previously served as interim chancellor for the past 10 months. During his tenure as interim chancellor, Trant made notable achievements, including the acquisition of Ascension St. Vincent’s Health System. He also reinforced the system’s commitment to student success, playing a crucial role in advancing higher education and ensuring neutral institutional platforms.
“Sid Trant has demonstrated exceptional leadership over the past several months, proving his ability to advance the University of Alabama System’s mission while strengthening its foundation for future success,” said Karen P. Brooks, a trustee who led the chancellor search.
Trant served as the UA System’s general counsel and senior vice chancellor for several years before serving as interim chancellor. He is a key member of the UA System’s senior leadership team.
“His steady leadership and strategic approach have already strengthened the University of Alabama System, and he has a clear dedication to the success of our universities and health system and to those we serve,” said Scott Phelps, Board of Trustees President Pro Tempore. “The Board is confident that the UA System will continue to expand its impact and set new standards of excellence under his leadership.”
