Hi there, my name is Emma Owen and I am a junior majoring in communication studies. In addition to writing for Kaleidoscope, I am a Blazerette and compete in the Miss Alabama Organization. Outside of class, I enjoy volunteering with various organizations in the Birmingham area, including Siren Snuggles, a nonprofit organization that I created and run. Sharing the stories of others through Kaleidoscope is a joy and I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity.

In addition to wearing masks during the game, social distancing is enforced at Legion Field to assist in keeping fans and players healthy. As additional COVID-19 studies begin at UAB, experts are testing immune-focused methods, with a goal of decreasing COVID-19 related complications and deaths. Dr. Sonya Heath, professor of medicine in UAB’s Division of Infectious Diseases, said antiretrovirals or antivirals are the common method for targeting COVID-19. Some UAB students are striving for a sustainable future through cost-effective and reusable menstrual products. Through the Campus Cup Initiative, students can sign up to receive a free menstrual cup from OrganiCup. Menstrual cups serve as an alternative to disposable menstrual products like pads and tampons. The OrganiCup can be cleaned and reused, unlike single-use products. As another UAB Homecoming approaches, Mr. and Ms. UAB prepare to pass on their titles after their year of service comes to a close. For some, documenting quarantine and COVID-19 experiences has served as a way to remember this significant time period. The employees at Lister Hill Library are taking this idea to a whole new level. Through the project, Documenting COVID-19 at UAB, members of the Blazer community can submit their pandemic experiences to Lister Hill through the form of art, written word, voice recordings and more. These documents will then be added to UAB’s collection. UAB’s chapter of Active Minds is an organization that advocates for mental health among the college community.
