Hi there, my name is Emma Owen and I am a junior majoring in communication studies. In addition to writing for Kaleidoscope, I am a Blazerette and compete in the Miss Alabama Organization. Outside of class, I enjoy volunteering with various organizations in the Birmingham area, including Siren Snuggles, a nonprofit organization that I created and run. Sharing the stories of others through Kaleidoscope is a joy and I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity.

As students continue to adjust to college during a pandemic, UAB announces it’s fifth year of record enrollment. Bradley Barnes, Ph.D. and vice provost for Enrollment Management, said UAB had a total enrollment increase of 2.2 percent, making this the fifth consecutive year of growth. “It occurred in an increasingly competitive higher education environment,” Barnes said. “Also during a pandemic that has created challenges of keeping UAB students healthy and safe. The city of Birmingham is home to many historical events that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement. Learning more about these events is just a brief walk or drive from campus. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is about a ten minute drive from campus and offers educational resources on the topic of the Civil Rights Movement and Birmingham history. Art therapy, educational seminars and community training sessions are just a few ways UAB’s Mental Health Ambassadors assist students. In the midst of the global pandemic, two students are using their skills with a goal of helping others.
