Kanopy is a streaming service available to UAB students for free through the UAB libraries. Its content is focused on independent, foreign and classic films.

George Washington

The first film from director David Gordon Green, “George Washington” follows a group of children in the poor, rural South who come together after one of their own dies during a game. It is a slow-moving lyrical film that looks at just how early some are some to lose their innocence in this world.

The Florida Project

Set at an old purple motel in Orlando, “The Florida Project” is the story of a Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), a six-year-old girl and her friends who find creative ways to make their own fun in the summer heat. The children mostly run free, except for occasional intervention by Moonee’s caring yet immature mother (Bria Vinaite) and the sympathetic motel manager (Willem Dafoe). Prepare to cry as “The Florida Project” really packs a punch with the ending.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

In “We Need to Talk About Kevin”, Eva (Tilda Swinton) is a mother living after her son Kevin (Ezra Miller) committed a terrible act. She replays in her mind her difficult relationship with him. It’s tough to tell what went wrong with him. Was it Eva’s parenting or was he always evil? It’s the age-old question: nature or nurture?

Good Time

“Good Time” is a thrilling, adrenaline rush of a film. Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson) and his developmentally disabled brother Nick (Benny Safdie) have just robbed a bank when Nick is picked up by the police. Now Connie needs $10,000 to bail him out as soon as possible, and he will do anything to get it. It is the best acting of Pattinson’s career, and there is not a slack second in its run time.

The Bling Ring

This is the true story of “The Bling Ring”, a group of Los Angeles teenagers who break into and the houses of the A-list celebrities. Sofia Coppola successfully mixes both comedy and tension as the fame-obsessed high schoolers move from being suburban nobodies to the source to the news coverage they desire. Set to a soundtrack that includes Frank Ocean, Azealia Banks and M.I.A., it’ll have you wanting to rob Paris Hilton, too.
