The Bulldogs defeat the Blazers 5-1

The UAB baseball team was not able to come back and defeat the Samford Bulldogs in the 10th inning as the Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the 10th following an hour-hour rain delay to start the game.

Austin Bohannon started for UAB (7-11, 0-0 CUSA) going four innings with two strikeouts. There would be seven other UAB pitchers put in the game with Evan Ingram (0-2) taking the loss after entering at the top of the ninth. Darryl Buggs led the Blazers offense with 1-for-3 batting and an RBI.

Samford (11-10, 3-0 SoCon) pitcher Billy Creger started for the Bulldogs going two innings with a strikeout. Chase Isbell struck out the final three batters for his fourth save and secured the win for Samford in the 10th inning.

Both teams got one hit in the first inning, but UAB got on the board first at the bottom of the second inning with Zach Davis hitting a double down the infield line. Buggs then hit a single into the right field giving him an RBI to bring in Davis for the score.

Samford would answer back at the top of the third inning. With Taylor Garris on third, Brooks Carlson reached on an error and Garris scored unearned.

Zeros would remain on the board ending the ninth inning tied at one a piece.

In the top of the 10th, Samford’s Max Pinto was placed on second base and Carlson singled to right field as Pinto would advance to third. Carson Allison would pinch run for Carlson and Davis Schwartz walked having bases loaded. Tyler McManus would hit a single down the middle getting a double RBI giving Samford a 3-1 lead. With McManus advancing to second base on a wild pitch, Schwartz would also move to third. Towns King would also hit a single down center field getting another double RBI for the bulldogs. After finally getting three outs, Samford lead the top of the 10th 5-1.

With Joseph Kiel placed on second base, UAB would leave one man on base as Isbell struck out the last three batters for the Blazers ending the game 5-1.

UAB will play their first conference opponent Middle Tennessee (11-8, 0-0 CUSA) this weekend in a 3-game series on March 26-28 in Birmingham.
