Quan Jackson had 18 points and eight rebounds as the Blazers trounced the Lions 84-59 to move to 2-0 on the season.
The first few minutes of the UAB’s game vs Southeastern Louisiana were close. After being tied 11-11 at 9:31 mark, UAB went on a 32-6 run to close the half. That large lead proved insurmountable as the Lions’ attempt to chip away at it during a messy second half fell short.
Strong shooting led to the Blazers’ score. They shot 53% from the floor. The most notable stat of the day may be the UAB’s 12 steals.
In addition to Jackson’s strong performance, Jalen Benjamin came off the bench to contribute 16 points with four three pointers. Five Blazers finished the game in the double digits.
It was a foul heavy game with UAB picking up 24 and Southeastern Louisiana picking up an additional 15. The Lions were unable to capitalize on their many attempts at the free throw line shooting only 42.9% from the line. Each team also picked up two technical fouls, as the game got testy in the second half.
Junior Guard Tavin Lovan fouled out with 14 points and eight rebounds with 3:10 left in the game, and two other Blazers had four fouls on the day.
Freshman guard Jamon Kemp, the son of NBA player Shawn Kemp, led the Lions with 12 points.
UAB returns to Bartow Arena to face Kennesaw State on Wednesday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on CUSA.tv and available to listen to on WJOX 100.5 in Birmingham.
