Students are being sent home from the residence halls, but some are unable or unwilling to go home this holiday season, and UAB has resources to help.
The UAB benevolent fun is based entirely on charitable donations, and their goal is to provide support to the UAB community. Part of that support is the Blazer Kitchen, a free food pantry for students and employees.
The Blazer Kitchen’s mission is to “increase food security in the UAB community by providing healthy food, resources, and referrals to UAB employees, students, patients and their families,” according to their website.
As of 2018, the Blazer Kitchen had served over 100,000 meals and 668 students.
Synclaire Casselberry, Blazer Kitchen Administrator, said ten to fifteen students utilize Blazer Kitchen’s resources daily.
“UAB’s Blazer Kitchen has given out 6,618 pounds of food, 710 pounds of personal hygiene or school supplies,” Casselberry said. “Everything in the Blazer kitchen is free. Students will need to register on their first visit, but after that, they only need to show their OneCard.”
Since COVID-19, the Blazer Kitchen has transitioned to online shopping only. Students must fill out an order form 24 hours in advance of when they plan on picking up their food.
From there, you can select your food or hygiene items and a pickup time online. Pick up is available at the Hill Student Center Suite 303, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Students are required to show their OneCard and wear a mask at pickup.
