UAB women’s basketball lost their first game to Louisiana Tech in the two-game series continuing their losing streak a seven-games.
Margaret Whitley led the Blazers in scoring with 13 points while also leading the team with six assists. Zakyia Weathersby led the team in rebounds grabbing nine of them while also scoring eight points.
Keiunna Walker led the Lady Techsters in scoring with 22 points with six rebounds. Amber Dixon recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Blazers looked good in the first quarter on the game, tying the game three times including a 3-pointer from Sam Mitchell to tie the game 17-17 within the final seconds of the quarter until Louisiana Tech’s Dixon scored a good jumper ending the first quarter 19-17.
UAB came out hot in the second quarter going on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes. It became another back-and-forth battle between the Blazers and the Lady Techsters with the Blazers leading going into half time 34-32.
Coming back from half time, the Lady Techsters came out swinging going on an 10-0 run against the Blazers late in the third quarter and taking the lead. The Blazers only managed to score 10 points ending the third quarter 55-42.
Louisiana Tech continued to play hard defense only allowing UAB to score nine points in the final quarter of the game as they put up another 20 points. As the final seconds of the game ended, UAB lost 75-51.
“In the second half we had some break downs but really it came down to poor shooting and not putting points on the board”, said head coach Randy Norton. “I’m confident our girls will regroup and come back strong tomorrow.”
The Blazers (7-10) will play the Lady Techsters (12-7) again tomorrow at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Bartow Arena.
