The Birmingham City Council met briefly on Tuesday morning as snow hit the Magic City. The council covered only essential business in its 22-minute-long virtual meeting. Of the 30 items passed, 28 were by consent.
Notable Items Passed:
- Approval of a federal grant of $6,272,092.60 to go towards Emergency Rental Assistance.
- Funds were allocated to assist in purchasing “student and teacher supplies” for Avondale Elementary, Glen Iris Elementary, Ramsay High School and EPIC Elementary school.
- Funds were assessed for the demolition costs for 13 properties deemed unsafe.
- A virtual public hearing has been set for March 16 to discuss the rezoning of the property at 2301 Avenue J in the Ensley neighborhood from single-family to mixed use medium. The rezoning would “allow for the construction of multifamily units and a 15,000 [square foot]commercial space for a grocery store.” The site is currently home to the former Ensley High School which closed in 2006 and suffered significant fire damaged in 2018.
