USGA election results finalized. Samant wins runoff

The USGA election commission shared the final results of the 2021 USGA elections today. The results are largely the same as the initial vote totals indicated with small changes.

Ritika Samant, a sophomore majoring in neuroscience, proved victorious in the Monday runoff for the Vice President of Student Services beating Hannah Syed 269 votes to 142. Syed, a sophomore majoring in chemistry, will still serve in USGA in the position of as senator for the College of Arts & Sciences as she finished in first place for that position during the general election.

The 411 votes cast in Monday’s runoff represents a turnout of only 3.2%, a severe dropoff from the already low turnout in last week’s general election.

Another change sees Davis Gustafson giving up the role of senator for the Collat School of Business to become the executive vice president-elect. Gustafson won election to both offices but had to choose one because the USGA constitution says that members cannot serve in both an executive council role and in another branch of the student government.

Five senate seats will be vacant, one in the School of Public Health, two in the Collat School of Business and both seats in the School Education. Senate seats are currently filled by appointment.

The executive council for the 2021-22 school year will consist of Angela Lee as president with Davis Gustafson, Xavier Turner, Ritika Samant and Sarah Tran all taking vice president roles.

The new student government will assume office at the USGA Spring banquet to be held on April 6.
