The UAB men’s tennis team took on Georgia State in Birmingham and lost 4-0 in matchplay. The match represented Senior Day where the departing members of the team were honored.
The match opened with the Blazers number one doubles team, consisting of Daniel Janko and Vojtech Podzemmy, losing 6-1 to Georgia State’s Kevin Huynh and Harvey Maughan. This was followed by Roman Postolka and Michal Lusovsky of the Blazers falling to Andrei Duarte and Robert Grinvalds 6-2. The third doubles matchup between the Blazers’ Giovani Pasini/Thanos Spyropoulos and Georgia State’s Steven Huynh/Mihai Marinescu was left unfinished.
During singles matchups, the Blazers saw no better fate as they went winless in their matchups. A highlight of the match saw Blazer 1 seed, Roman Postolka take Harvey Maughan to an 8 game pro set tiebreaker where he came just short of victory losing 8 games to 6. The rest of the matches concluded as follows:
#2 Michal Lusovsky split the first two sets with Robert Grinvalds, in set 3, he won 3 games while Grinvalds won 4, but ultimately, the match was unfinished.
#3 seed Thanos Spyropoulos fell in straight sets to Andrei Duarte losing 5 games to 7, and then 4 games to 6.
#4 Vojtech Podzemmy’s match was left unfinished against Georgia State’s Mihai Marinescu.
#5 seed Nikola Puric’s match was left unfinished against Kevin Huynh.
#6 Giovani Pasini lost in straight sets to Diego Padilha with scores of 3 games to 6 in set 1 and 4 games to 6 in set 2.
The Blazers certainly hope to see brighter days in the future, but even a loss did not take away from Senior Day where Giovani Pasini was honored for his time as a member of the Blazer tennis team. Pasini was honored with recognition and a celebratory photo frame gifted to him by the team.
UAB men’s tennis will return to action versus Belmont (10-3, 3-1 OVC) in Nashville on Saturday, April 17.
