Matt Whall named new men’s golf coach
Matt Whall was named the latest head coach of the UAB men’s golf program by athletic director Mark Ingram on July 14.
Whall arrives at UAB from Florida State where he spent the previous four seasons as an assistant with the men’s and women’s teams. In the past year, the Seminoles men’s team finished the season in fifth nationally and the women’s team finished in tenth.
“Our staff and team are excited to welcome Matt Whall as our next head coach,” Ingram said. “Matt has a steady and thoughtful approach to his work, which stood out to our search committee. We have a proud history in Men’s Golf, and Matt’s vision and experience will allow us to take the next steps towards future success.”
Whall inherits a golf program with a history of recent success. The team finished in 24th place at the 2021 NCAA National championships this past spring in their eighth appearance overall.
Whall replaces Mike Wilson who left UAB after five seasons to accept the head coaching position at Wisconsin.
UAB football picked to top Conference USA West
The UAB football team was predicted to finish first in the Conference USA West division by league media, the conference announced Monday. Five players were also named to the conference’s preseason watchlist.
The Blazers received 15 first place votes ahead of second place finisher UTSA (9).
In the East division, Marshall was predicted to finish in first place with 17 votes with Florida Atlantic (6) and Western Kentucky (1) also receiving votes.
The five players named to the conference watchlist are sophomore running back DeWayne McBride, offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort, redshirt junior defensive lineman Antonio Moultrie, senior defensive back Kristopher Moll and junior punter Kyle Greenwell.
Moll was named first-team All-Conference-USA last season, and Moultrie was a second team selection.
