The UAB Blazers kept the Jacksonville State Gamecocks scoreless in their 31-0 win in Montgomery.
Tyler Johnston III dominated the passing game for UAB throwing 17-21 for 320 yards with two touchdown passes.
Jermaine Brown Jr. led the running game for the Blazers rushing 78 yards on 14 attempts with one touchdown. DeWayne McBride ran for another 54 yards on 12 attempts.
UAB’s Trae Shropshire led the game with five catches for 128 yards and a touchdown.
Dy’John Turner led the Blazers defense with six total tackles as UAB kept Jacksonville State’s offense to just 155 total yards.
Jacksonville State’s Zerrick Cooper threw 18-35 for 91 yards. Copper also led the Gamecocks in rushing with 28 yards. PJ Wells had the most receiving yards catching three for 42 yards.
Neither team scored in the first quarter as both team’s defenses did most of the work. Jacksonville State recovered a fumble off of McBride.
With time winding down in the second quarter, UAB scored first with a three-yard touchdown pass from Johnston to RaJae Johnson-Sanders. UAB would soon get the ball back and Matt Quinn would kick a 27-yard field goal to end the first half 10-0.
The Blazers would score on the opening drive of the third quarter with Johnston throwing a 23-yard pass to Gerrit Prince. With about three minutes left, Brown Jr. would run a 10-yard rushing touchdown ending the quarter 24-0.
UAB would score the last set of points late in the fourth quarter with Dylan Hopkins throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass to Shropshire.
UAB (1-0) will play at Georgia (0-0) Saturday, Sep. 11. Kickoff will be at 2:30 P.M.
