UAB has been officially approved to move to the AAC Conference early Thursday morning Oct. 21, with Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice and Texas San Antonio. They will go on to compete against current AAC members East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, South Florida, Southern Methodist, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State.
AAC Commissioner Michael Aresco said UAB has been a desired school to have in the AAC being a comprehensive research school as well as an academic medical center that boasts a Department of Athletics.
“UAB is a strong addition to the American Athletic Conference,” Aresco said. “We were proud to extend an invitation to President Ray Watts and Athletic Director Mark Ingram and are excited about the institutional support from the University of Alabama System Office and Board of Trustees. On behalf of all American Athletic Conference member institutions, I welcome the Blazer family to a bright future.”
With UAB joining the AAC, they will compete former conference old rivals such as Memphis, East Carolina, USF, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa who were former members of C-USA.
