UAB (5-2, 3-0) will close out homecoming week with a game against the struggling Rice Owls.
This is the fifth annual Children’s Harbor game. The Blazers will be wearing the names of 500 patients at Children’s Hospital on their jerseys. This tradition started when the UAB football program was reinstated back in 2017.
All jerseys will be donated to the patients after and the game. UAB is currently 4-0 in Children’s Harbor games.
“How special is it to see the names of the 500 patients we have honored. It’s a big deal.” said head coach Bill Clark. “I talk a lot about history, I talk about who you are playing for, and these guys know it. Being able to draw attention to a great cause.”
The Blazers recorded their fifth win of the season in a 34-0 victory over Southern Miss last week. It’s also the second shutout of the season for UAB after their win over Jacksonville State on Sept. 1.
Rice (2-4, 1-1) will come into this game after a shutout loss against UTSA 45-0. It was their second shutout loss of the season. Out of Rice’s two wins, one was against Conference USA opponent Southern Miss 24-19.
The Blazer defense is looking to continue to force turnovers as they have recorded a takeaway in six of the first seven contests and six games in a row.
Safety Grayson Cash won special teams player of the week in C-USA for blocking a punt and recovering it in the endzone for a Blazer touchdown. Cash has scored two touchdowns in the last two games for UAB.
The Rice offense has been average 450 total yards throughout their last three games, compared to UAB 282 total yards a game. However, the UAB defense has been able to hold opponent offensives to average about 300 total yards a game while the Rice defense has allowed opponents offensives to over 400 total yards.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
