Five runs in the first inning secure UAB (17-7) a 10-4 win against Birmingham-Southern in the first annual Rickwood College Classic.
Held at America’s oldest baseball field, the Rickwood Classic is an annual throwback game played by the Birmingham Barons. This year Rickwood Field invited two local colleges to face each other on the historic field.
The top performers in this game were John Marc Mullins, Christian Hall and Logan Braunschweig. All three players gained two runs over the Panthers. Both Hall and Braunschweig had an RBI of two this game.
The Blazers opened the game with a strong batting performance in the first inning. They gained five runs. The Panthers were able to get one run in the second inning, but pitcher Leo Harris kept them at zero for four out of five innings he pitched.
Harris pitched six strikeouts in five innings before being replaced by Jordan Bank in the sixth inning.
After the five run stretch in the first half the Blazers slowed to scoring only one run in the second, third and seventh innings.
By the seventh inning, the Blazers took a solid seven-point lead. However, in the top of the eighth, Birmingham-Southern’s Noah Best got a hit that sent two Panthers to the home plate bringing the score to 8-2
The Panthers ended the game with two final runs in the ninth inning giving them a total of four runs.
The Blazers will take on Marshall on April 1 at Young Memorial Field. First pitch will be at 6 pm.
