The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees Compensation Committee met on Friday and approved a six-year contract extension for UAB men’s basketball head coach Andy Kennedy. The extension will keep him with the Blazers through the 2030-31 season.
Kennedy, who has led the program since 2020, previously signed an extension in September 2023 that ran through the 2028-29 season, paying him a $1 million salary with annual $100,000 increases. His new deal is set to pay him $1.4 million in the first season and $1.5 million annually in years two through six. His salary last season was $1.3 million, including incentives.
Director of Athletics Mark Ingram praised the extension, calling Kennedy’s tenure “tremendous success” and emphasizing the program’s growth under his leadership.
Under Kennedy, UAB has compiled a 125-50 record, made two NCAA tournament appearances, reached the NIT’s later rounds twice, and played in four consecutive conference championship games.
“I would like to thank Mark Ingram, President Watts, Chancellor Trant and the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees for their continued support of our mission,” Kennedy said. “I was honored in March of 2020 to become the seventh head men’s basketball coach in UAB history.”
Jeff Gronberg, chair of the Compensation Committee, also expressed enthusiasm for the program’s future. “We’re really excited to see what Andy’s going to do moving forward and excited about the improvements to the basketball facility there,” he said.
