The UAB Blazers Men’s Basketball team tipped off their regular season on Monday night with a decisive 106-55 win over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
Coming into the matchup, the Blazers, led by head coach Andy Kennedy, looked to start the regular season strong after dropping two exhibition games to Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky. As it happens, a strong start is exactly what they had. The Blazers maintained full control of the direction and pace of play throughout the full 40 minutes of the matchup. Soon after tipoff, Blazer guard Jacob Meyer’s scoring fueled a 16-4 run in the early minutes of the game. After another dominant 20-3 run in the final minutes of the first half, the Blazers led 59-22 at halftime.
Their unrelenting performance continued throughout the second half of the game as they worked tirelessly to increase their lead. After it was all said and done, five Blazers boasted double-digit scoring efforts on the night, led by sophomore transfer Chance Westry who had a team-high 23 points.
The momentum of a dominant opening win will be behind the Blazers as they continue on into the regular season, including their next matchup against the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
