Here at Kaleidoscope, we stand by Destiny Washington, her loved ones and others that have been taken too soon through acts of violence.
On December 17, Washington was killed after being shot in the Hill Student Center parking lot.
No student should fear stepping on campus, no matter the time of day. UAB’s campus should be a safe space for each student.
We are calling for the university to do better. According to an email from the university, UAB Police determined there was no active threat to campus at the time they were notified.
Students living in Birmingham could have been filling up their gas tank, sitting at a stoplight or entering their apartment all while not knowing a killer was free and possibly nearby.
We must do better, UAB and the City of Birmingham must rise up against acts of violence.
Put yourself in Destiny’s shoes, picture yourself as Destiny’s mom or one of her sisters. This so easily could have happened to any one of us.
We will have the privilege of continuing our education, graduating and entering the workforce. Destiny Washington will not. Her family won’t get to visit with her during winter break. Her friends won’t be able to greet her as classes begin next spring. For that reason, we will not forget her name. Birmingham will not forget her name.
Hold your loved ones close and help us fight for justice. Help us remember Destiny Washington.
Stay safe, look out for your friends and protect yourself.
