This weekend in Birmingham June 18-20

With Juneteenth and Father’s Day both happening this weekend, it’s a big one for events to do in Birmingham. Check out our handy guide below for a list of a few great ways you can spend it.

Friday

Grab ‘n Go Crafts

Where: Birmingham Public Libraries
When: 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Price: Free

The Birmingham Public Library has four free “grab ‘n go” crafts that you can get on Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Video demonstrations of how to do the crafts will be posted to the library’s Facebook page. Juneteenth Game Night with BSAC

Where: Zoom
When: 6 p.m.
Price: Free

UAB’s Black Student Awareness Committee is hosting a virtual game night for Juneteenth. Play games, win prizes and listen to poetry over Zoom. See their Instagram for more details.

Saturday

Juneteenth in the Civil Rights District

Where: Civil Rights District
When 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Price: Free

Celebrate Juneteenth with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The BCRI galleries will be open free of charge. You can also enjoy food from local vendors and other special events. See Kaleidoscope’s preview of the celebration here.

The Modern Greenbook’s First Annual Juneteenth Fest

Where: Legion Field
When: 12 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Price: Free until 5, special passes sold separately

Celebrate Juneteenth at Legion Field with live performances, a barbecue showdown and more with the first annual Juneteenth Fest hosted by The Modern Greenbook. Entry is free before 5 p.m. and passes for the barbecue showdown are $10. See the event page for more details.

Ghost Train’s Pride Dance Party

Where: Ghost Train Brewing Company
When: 12 p.m. – Midnight
Price: No cover charge

Drop by Ghost Train Brewing Company to dance the night away in another of the month’s Pride events. The party will feature music from DJ Coco, a Pride-inspired drink menu and drag show from 7 to 8 p.m. Ten percent of all sales on the night will be donated to Central Alabama Pride. “Miss Juneteenth” Playing at Sidewalk Cinema

Where: Sidewalk
When: 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Price: $7.75 – $10.75

Miss Juneteenth tells the story of Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie) entering her reluctant daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) into the local Miss Juneteenth pageant in hopes of her winning and getting a scholarship for college. You can see Miss Juneteenth at Sidewalk on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for $7.75 and 8 p.m. for $10.75.

The Dinner Detective

Where: DoubleTree Birmingham Perimeter Park
When: 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Price: $59.99 for general admission, additional $19.99 for the suspect package

Enjoy an interactive murder mystery with your dinner on Saturday with the Dinner Detective. Make it a Father’s Day treat and surprise your dad by buying the suspect package, which allows you to make a member of your group the prime suspect without their knowledge. Buy tickets here.

Danceteria at Mom’s Basement

Where: Mom’s Basement
When: 9 p.m.
Price: no cover fee

At 9 p.m. you can swing by Mom’s Basement and get down to your favorite 80s music from new wave to old school hip hop with DJ Bradford. No cover fee required.

All Weekend

Birmingham Rage Room

The first Birmingham rage room is now open. Their hours are 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week. Pricing starts at $15 per person and $1 per minute at five minute intervals. Breakables, the things you’ll be breaking, start at $15 a package and you’re welcome to bring your own.
