If you’re a fan of classic platform games like “Super Metroid” and “Super Mario Bros.” but find yourself looking for something with a spooky, almost somber edge, look no further than “Hollow Knight”.
Released in 2017, “Hollow Knight” is an indie action platformer developed by Team Cherry. You play as the skeleton of a small bug knight and work your way through an abandoned, underground city of bugs.
The animations are smooth, and the art style is simultaneously adorable and slightly unsettling. The history of the city is woven seamlessly into the story, which makes exploring the game feel both realistic and rewarding.
The main storyline will take the average player about 30 hours to get through, but there are many other side stories and areas to explore that allow you to delve further into the game. If you’re dedicated to learning everything about the “Hollow Knight” world, there are plenty of opportunities to solve mysteries and immerse yourself in the small details of this game.
“Hollow Knight” can be purchased for PC and most modern consoles for only $15, which, compared to other full-length games that have recently been released, is a deal for the amount of content you get.
The animations are also all hand drawn, which serves as a great example of the fusion between traditional visual art and the newer forms of art that are emerging with advances in technology. “Hollow Knight” has done this flawlessly, combining striking visuals, rich (yet subtle) storytelling and classic RPG gameplay mechanics into a beautiful game.
Team Cherry also deserves immense praise for the game’s design and development. Being a team of only three people–with Ari Gibson and Willam Pellen as co-directors and Jack Vine as Coder–I especially appreciate them making the game affordable.
Team Cherry also allows third parties to make and sell independent merchandise for the game, which is a nice gesture for the fans and further shows that the team is not overly concerned with generating profits at the expense of consumer accessibility and enjoyment.
“Hollow Knight” has something to offer for anyone who likes video games, mysteries, visual art or bugs! If you’re interested in a contemporary platformer with incredible gameplay, check out “Hollow Knight”.
