Thursday evening, UAB broke No. 19 FAU’s 20-game winning streak 86-72 in Bartow Arena. This is the first time a ranked opponent has been to Bartow since 2019. UAB’s Eric Gaines led the Blazers this game with 21 points and 10-11 at the free throw line. Gaines started strong, opening the game with two free throws followed by a jumper. UAB men’s basketball opened their season with a 98-47 win in an exhibition game against Mississippi College. UAB showcased a new roster during a Tuesday exhibition game against Mississippi College. East Tennessee State transfer student, Ladarius Brewer, and LSU transfer Eric Gaines led the Blazers to a 51-point victory, having 14 points each. The Blazers started strong by winning tipoff then straight into a three-pointer by Jordan “Jelly” Walker. Followed by back-to-back goals by UAB’s Trey Jemison. In a battle of field goals, redshirt junior, Matt Quin stole the show for the green team kicking a perfect five out of five bringing the score to 6-9 at halftime where the score was held until the fourth quarter. In four fifteen-minute quarters, the green team defeated the gold team 16-6. The Green team’s success is partially attributed to running back Zeus Perryman who scored the only touchdown of the game seven minutes into the fourth quarter. Five runs in the first inning secure UAB (17-7) a 10-4 win against Birmingham-Southern in the first annual Rickwood College Classic. Held at America’s oldest baseball field, the Rickwood Classic is an annual throwback game played by the Birmingham Barons. This year Rickwood Field invited two local colleges to face each other on the historic field. The top performers in this game were John Marc Mullins, Christian Hall and Logan Braunschweig. With 1:18 left in the game, UAB’s KJ Buffen passed the ball to Trey Jemison for an authoritative dunk, giving the Blazers an eight-point lead. UAB (24-7) would maintain that lead and defeat Louisiana Tech (21-9) 87-74 in a battle for the second seed in Conference USA’s West division. The game’s top scorers were Jordan Walker with 24 points and Mike Ertel with 20. Quan Jackson and Trey Jemison added 16 points each.
